After watching the movie and our discussion in class how do you feel about diagnosing and labeling children that have bipolar depression as such. Give reasons and explanations for your answer!!!!
I believe that it is extremely sad to even hear about children having a bi polar disorder. Its sad because first of all they are young and cannot fully understand what the disease is. These children are put on numerous medications which surely are not healthy for them as well. They go through a series of highs and lows everyday where their moods are ever-changing. This probably hinders them in friendships, relationships and social skills. Its not their fault they have the disease. It was heartbreaking to see the child on the documentary how he was punished because of his actions he couldn’t control. It was also sad to see how many medications he is on since he is still young.
I think that diagnosing or labeling children with bipolar disorder so early can have both a negative and postive effect. It can be negative because they start at such an early age as already being labled as something not normal which can have an negative impact on their self-esteem and out look on life. Also taking so many medications at such an young age could be damaging to their brains since they arn't fully developed yet. I also think by getting diagnosed bipolar at a young age can help you cope with it early and also be less frustrated because you don't know why you can't control your emotions. I think they should also try to be on as little medication as they can so that their brains won't be so heavidly over loaded with medications.
I also think that there are positive and negative sides to this. For example, the positive side to this is that when a child is diagnosed with bipolar disease at a young age, it helps both the parents and the kid to prepare for the future and uderstand what is wrong at a young age. The down side is that it kind of hinders the kid from being able to enjoy life the way others do.
I feel that diagnosing a child with the illness of bi polar disorder could benefit the child and or harm the child. One of the benefits of diagnosing someone at such a young age could be catching a severe case of it early. This sickness could possibly become more aggressive as the child gets older, and with the help of the medicine the doctors would prescribe him or her, the child could potentially get along better with their friends and piers at school. It could also help the child not to have a lot of emotional trauma at such a young age. As we learned in class the other day, people who have a bi polar disorder most of the time end up going through a period of depression. If someone’s illness is caught early enough, hopefully it could save them years of dark days if they take their medicine. Some disadvantages of diagnosing a while so early with bi polar disorder, would be that the child would never actually have a normal life. In the movie we watched in class Monday about the two boys with bi polar disorders, they showed all of the medicine the kids have to take every day. It is terrible to think that kids have to live off of medicine at such a young age. Also, in my opinion, unless there are extreme significant signs that the child has a bipolar disorder, it could just be that the child is going through a rough spot in his or her life. Or maybe, the child is just simply being a bratty teenager. Either way, I would never want someone, or someone’s child to ever be diagnosed with a bipolar disorder.
I feel that labeling children with that disease is not a good idea for the child, or the parents in charge of the children. I personally believe that children could be to young to diagnose them with that problem. To doctors, it could be bipolar disease, but to the children, it could just be them being hyper, so it is probably to early to determine any actual disease, especially if they do not have an actual test that shows someone who might have bipolar disease. I also believe that if you label a young kid as someone who might be “crazy”, it could really lower their self esteem, and that would not help them with school, or their social life. So diagnosing children with bipolar disease is not a good idea, but if they continue to show signs of that disease when they are older, it would be safer to determine their various problems.
I think that diagnosing young children with bipolar can have a negative and positive outlook on their life. I don' think it is a good idea to identify and confirm that a young child has bipolar because taking all the medications associated with bipolar can damage their brain at such and early age. Instead of putting the kid on medication the Doctors should keep studying the child for signs until it becomes completely positive they have the disease. On the other hand I think it is positive to study into a child for this disease because it can help them understand why they act in such a behavior but i do not agree with giving a child so many medications since their brain is not fully developed.
I believe that it is hard to really and truthfully diagnose a child with bipolar disease, because kids are so up and down in their emotions. If the child continues to show these same emotions as they get older and more stable, I believe it is more acceptable to label a child "bipolar". I have brothers who are four and seven. It's really hard to say that these boys are bipolar or not because of how they are emotionally. They react according to how much sleep they got, if they're hungry, if they really want something or not, etc. Who is the doctor to label someone bipolar and put them on medication for it, when it could just be their age and immaturity that is causing them to act that way? I completely disagree with labeling someone under 10 with the bipolar disease.
Hearing of children that have bipolar depression disorder is a very sad thing. Then to go as far as labeling and judging them for acting out due to their disorder is even worse. I think that no child should be judged or labeled until they are fully capable of understanding their disorder and how they can control it. As for instance the little boy in the movie that threw his chair at the teacher. He shouldnt be judged and shouldnt have gotten suspended because he clearly expressed that he was feeling upset and needed to take a walk and they did not permit him to do that. If a child is capable of expressing how they are feeling when they know they have this disorder and they need a certain outlet and someone is not willing to give them that outlet, then the only way for the child to feel better is to lash out. So for someone to label that child or to judge them based off of a disorder they really have little control over is outrageous.
I think labeling or diagnosing a child with a bipolar disorder can have its ups and downs. As a young child nobody would want to be made of or think your different from everyone else because they have this specific type of disorder. Kids self-esteem would probably be really low and they would probably have few friends. The only good thing about having this disorder at a young age is the parents of the child could start early in their kid's medication so it wont be as severe when they get older.
After watching the video and our discussion in class, I do not think it is bad to diagnose children with bipolar disorder. I believe if I was a child I would rather know if I had a problem then I would rather know about it then feel like I was a freak. I think the parents should also know because they need to know how to treat their child. I feel like the child would benefit more if them and their families knew about their bipolar disorder. If a child knew why they acted out in aggression, I think they would be able to handle it better.
